Michigan summers can be intense, and when a heat wave arrives, many homeowners notice their AC not keeping up with the Michigan heat wave. If your home feels warmer than expected, it doesn’t always mean your system is broken. More often, it’s the natural limits of air conditioning combined with the extra strain that extreme weather brings. Understanding why this happens can help you manage comfort and efficiency.

Air conditioners are designed to cool indoor spaces to about 18–22 degrees below the outdoor temperature. On a 95‑degree day, that means your home may only reach 75–77 degrees inside. When temperatures climb higher, your system works harder but may still struggle to keep up. Several factors make this worse. Hot outdoor air slows the condenser’s ability to release heat. High humidity adds extra load and makes your home feel warmer. Dirty filters restrict airflow, and poor insulation or sun‑exposed windows allow more heat into your home.

There are clear signs that your AC is under stress. You might notice longer cooling cycles, warm air coming from vents, higher energy bills, short cycling where the system turns on and off too often, or unusual noises. These are all signals that your unit is working harder than it should.

The good news is that there are simple steps you can take to help. Close blinds or curtains during the hottest part of the day to block sunlight. Keep your thermostat set between 75 and 78 degrees instead of lowering it drastically, which only forces the system to run longer. Use ceiling fans to circulate cool air. Replace or clean filters regularly to keep airflow strong. Try to avoid using ovens or dryers during peak heat. Most importantly, schedule preventive HVAC maintenance so your system is ready before the next heat wave arrives.

Sometimes, though, the problem goes beyond the weather. If your AC is blowing warm air, making loud noises, or failing to cool at all, it could be a refrigerant leak, frozen coils, or compressor trouble. These issues need professional attention.

Called about blower for AC. Promptly came out next day on time. Was able to fix the blower in under 30 minutes. Admitted that the error was on their end when they had fixed the furnace last winter. Would have been easy to get me to pay the service fee and labor, given I have no electrical background. But the technician was very honest and straightforward.
